Sri Lanka Carrom Masters Rome 2015, Italy

On Sunday 4th October the 14th edition of the Sri Lankan Masters Cup was held in Rome opening the new carrom season 2015-16. The organizers - Sri Lankan Carrom Masters Rome is one of  the oldest carrom clubs in Italy and was founded in 1997. This year the five original founder members were all present: Ari Liyanage, Patrick Philips, Susil Kurera – who are also office bearers and founder members of the Italian Carrom Federation, and Bimal Fonseka and Sriyantha Weerasinghe.

For many years the Masters Cup has been a doubles event open to 16 teams. The players are divided into two groups and seven games are played to select semi-finalists. In Group A - Sriyantha Weerasinghe and Gianluca Cristiani qualified with all wins whereas Ari Liyanage and Patrick Philips came second. In Group B - Elisa Zucchiatti and Paolo Martinelli qualified in first position with all wins and one draw while Wasantha Kalimbura and Thamidu came in second place. In the semi-finals Ari and Patrick easily beat Elisa and Paolo and went on to lose the final against European Doubles champions Sriyantha and Gianluca who remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. In the final for 3rd and 4th place Elisa and Paolo lost 17-18 to Wasantha and Thamidu.

The Sri Lankan Masters Cup is characterized by a friendly atmosphere and coming together of old friends and new. Throughout the day delicious Sri Lankan and Italian specialties were served, making this a very special event for all players and guests. SLCMR thank the Italian Carrom Federation for their support and the sponsor Brunello Cuccinelli Spa for the generous donation of trophies.

Peter Boecker wins First Tournament of the Open German Carrom Championship 2015, Berlin

German Champion Peter Boecker once again proved that he is the best carrom player in Germany in an all-German finals. The First tournament of the Open German Carrom Championship of the German Carrom Federation was organised on the 14th of March in Berlin. Participated by thirty nine (39) players including five (5) from Poland and two (2) from Czech Republic. The matches were held using the Swiss system (Round Robin). In the 7 rounds where the Swiss system was applied, Peter Boecker who hails from Dortmund, was the only undefeated player. In the finals Peter defeated Johannes Joerg of Koeln (Cologne) in 9 boards. After the 7th board Johannes was leading 17-13 and was about to win the 8th board with at least nine (9) points, but a minor mistake in pocketing the Queen proved too costly and he lost that board. In the 9th board Peter was in his "element" so to speak and found no difficulty in wrapping up this nail-biting match and winning the championship.

In the meantime, young Tobias Krueger of Dortmund came on third (3rd) place and Jan Geister of Berlin 4th.

Jakub Nowakowski of Poland was 5th, while the newly elected G.C.F. President Dirk Polchow finished 6th.The tournament was very well organised by the Carrom Sports Association of Berlin.
